1955

My Grandfather was an avid photographer. Everywhere he went, he snapped pictures with his Leica camera.

This is the Utopia Lodge in 1955. It's either in Jackson, Wyoming, or near Yellowstone Park, because that's what it says on the box of slides. I have hundred of boxes of old slides from my Grandparents, who unfortunately are both long gone. I can scan slides, 16 at a time, in my HP Scanjet G4050.
                                           .

Undoubtedly, the main drag of Jackson, Wyoming. Check out the antique tin!
                                           .

This deer and moose antler arch is the gateway to a park in Jackson Hole.

.

I'm guessing this is Old Faithful, 56 years ago.

  1. Things were so much neater back then. I'm sure there were "scuzzy" areas, but in all the pictures I see from the '40s and '50s, everything always looks so trim. Not so much these days. Pity...

  2. Hi Craig,

In those days, people believed in ownership and kept their properties tidy. Nowadays, "homeowners" know that they're just renting from the government, and how can you have pride in your home when the bank is knocking at the door?

People took better care of their things back then, too, because new ones cost so much. I remember my parents and grandparents fixed everything--nothing was thrown away. Now everything you buy is a throwaway.

  5. What lovely photos! You're right, people did take care of things back then. Americans seem so sloppy today.

Hope all is well with you.

  6. Hi Lisa,

Alive and kicking here, just busy working insane hours. This post was old enough to kick your comment into moderation. I'm hoping to get back to posting and commenting at the end of January. Sigh.

I'm hoping to get back to sane work hours by the end of January. Then I'll have time to comment and post. Today I'm catching up on badly neglected home and car maintenance.

  9. David. My parents owned the utpoia lodge 1960 thur 1970. Spent my summers there cleaning notel rooms and riding horses. Loved jackson hole. The motel was 2 blocks into town. Across from a chvrin statuon and fort jackson store. Henry fonda stayed at our motel when they filmed spencers mountain. So did directer, and cartwrights. Went riding with angela and verinica cartwright. How fun 2 c pics of good old days.

  10. Cheryl,

Thanks for the update on the happenings at the Utopia Lodge. And I remember the Cartwright sisters. Lost in Space was my favorite TV Program when I was a boy.
